15th Annual "First There First Care" Emergency Medical Services Conference to be Held May 26 & 27 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
South Florida's Premier EMS Event to Feature Adrenaline-Fueled Second Annual James Malcolm Advanced Life Support Competition
HOLLYWOOD, FLA. – The Broward County Regional Emergency Medical Services Council, the Fire Chiefs Association of Broward County and City College will present the 15th annual "First There First Care" Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Conference and the second annual James Malcolm Advanced Life Support (ALS) Competition on May 26 & 27 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
"Holding this year's conference and competition at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood is an excellent opportunity for Broward County to showcase its leadership role in the field of EMS continuing education," said Brian Brown, chief of the EMS Division for the Seminole Tribe Fire Rescue. "In the wake of budget cuts across the board, this central location makes organizing and attending the conference more affordable for the EMS community."
Approximately 200 paramedics, emergency medical technicians, nurses, and fire rescue personnel are expected to attend the two-day event which begins on Thursday, May 26 at 8:30 a.m. with the "EMS Case-by-Case: A Collaborative Effort" Conference. The highlight of the program features keynote speaker Steve Berry, BA, NREMT-P of JEMS magazine as well as case presentations on pediatric burns, cardiac arrest and post-arrest hypothermia, adult trauma and tactical rescue, wake-up stroke and adolescent excited delirium.
On Friday, May, 27 the Hard Rock will host the adrenaline-fueled, James Malcolm ALS Competition which features 18 local and national fire rescue teams testing their paramedic skills in a head-to-head competition. The teams are placed in a simulated, life-threatening situation (to be announced as it happens). This year's teams hail from Miami-Dade, St. Johns, Flagler, Palm Beach and Hillsborough Counties, as well as Broward County.
The competition is named for James Malcolm, a bright and young influential individual who touched the lives of many in the South Florida EMS world. Malcolm served in both the public and private sectors as a firefighter-paramedic and an EMS instructor. Prior to his death in 2010, he was the clinical coordinator for the EMS Academy.
The "First There First Care" Conference and James Malcolm ALS Competition is also sponsored by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Sheridan Emergency Physicians Services, HCA Hospitals and North Shore Medical Center FMC Campus.
